New EU funded project - Carbowave

May 4, 2025

January 2025 has marked the official start of the EU funded CARBOWAVE project!

As a consortium of 9 partners from 5 European countries - University of Limerick, Ireland, Centro Ricerche Fiat, Italy, Juno Composites Ltd, Ireland, Eire Composites, Ireland, Muegge GmbH, Germany, University of Valencia, Spain - we will use plasma and microwave heating techniques to produce carbon fibres over the next 4 years.

Microwave technology has been chosen to improve on the current industrial process for converting PAN into carbon fibre, an energy intensive process that drives up the final cost and limits the applications of carbon fibre. CARBOWAVE aims to change this by introducing cutting-edge plasma and microwave heating technologies to reduce energy consumption, carbon emissions and production costs by over 70% without compromising performance.

This project is funded by HORIZON-CL5-2024-D4-01-03, grant no. 101192581.
